[DAVID Burchfield is pictured with Exeter MP Ben Bradshaw, who was presented with a copy of the book]. AN Exeter man with Parkinson’s disease and whose sight is severely impaired has defied the odds by releasing a book of poetry. David Burchfield’s book has already proved a hit with medical professionals, local writers and friends and is now available to the public via his new website, which went live this week. The book, called Reflexions on Life, includes material from the 1960s through to after David was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1995. David is treated at Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital by consultant neurologist Dr Tim Harrower and has received physiotherapy from the city’s community rehabilitation team, which is managed by the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust. David, 66, of Pennsylvania, said: “The books have sold really well and the feedback has been amazing, both from friends and professionals. “Consultants at RD&E have bought copies, along with other professionals within the Devon county framework. “It has taken a lot of hard work but my motto is ‘no surrender’!” The book is dedicated to David’s sister-in-law Jenny, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer last year. All proceeds are being split between Parkinson’s UK, for research into the disease, and Marie Curie Cancer Care. David’s wife, Penelope, said: “David has lived his life dedicated to the preservation of the English language. He has always been a keen athlete and when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, over 18 years ago, he typically refused to give in to it and immersed himself in any research or information about the condition that he could find. David is now also registered severely sight impaired. He decided to write a book of poems after so many people encouraged him. He has dedicated the book to my sister Jenny, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer last year, as he wanted to do something to help. She is very touched by what he has achieved. David’s motto is ‘no surrender’ and this just shows, against the odds, what can be achieved. I am so proud of him.” The book costs £5 and can be bought as a hard copy or downloaded from his website at http://davidburchfieldpoetry.com or https://www.facebook.com/davidburchfieldpoetry
